Films To See In 2019!

The new year has arrived and with that brings a plethora of things to see throughout the next 12 months. I know a lot of people don’t go to the cinema too often and tend to pick and choose which films they go to see. So I’ve compiled a list of films that I feel will be worth checking out this year!

JANUARY

Largely a dry month not many quality films are released so early in the year – due to cold weather and people’s willingness to spend time doing other things with loved ones after a busy Holiday season.

  • GLASS – After the wide success of the film ‘Split’ M. Night Shyamalan returns with the next feature in the franchiseWith Samuel L Jackson and Bruce Willis reprising their roles as Mr. Glass and The Overseer joining James McAvoy’s many personalities. This could be a great way to welcome in the new year!

Yeah… that’s probably just it.

February

Another month which is usually average for film releases however does have potential gems so shouldn’t be dismissed like the month of January.

  • The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part – After the original Lego Movie shocked audiences worldwide and became an instant hit, with other successful follow ups, comes the eagerly awaited sequel. With Phil Lord and Christopher Miller back writing and producing expect a fun time and a good story. A must watch for the family!
  • Alita: Battle Angel – A risky pick for sure. Similar films have relatively flopped and there is every chance for this one to as well. However the early trailers have looked intriguing. With a strong cast and director as well as an interesting concept, add to that impressive visual effects could put this film on the underrated list for 2019 – I have doubts it will be good enough to make top 10 lists when all is said and done.

March

The quality picks up in March and now we will see many releases which will be hyped up and talked about throughout the year.

(Universal Pictures)
  • Captain Marvel – With the huge tease at the end of Infinity War comes the MCU’s first female driven film and what better way to do it than with Captain Marvel herself. Portrayed by Oscar/BAFTA/Golden Globes winning actress Brie Larson, joined by Jude LawSamuel L JacksonBen Mendelsohn and Annette Benning this is sure to be another Marvel hit and a great precursor for ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
  • Us – One of my most anticipated of the year! Jordan Peele is back after his smash hit ‘Get Out’. He is joined by a stellar cast and if the first trailer is anything to go by, this will be a fantastic and chilling Horror/Thriller.
  • Dumbo – 2019 is going to a massive year for Disney and they are hitting those childhood ‘feels’ with a live action remake of the classic film. Tim Burton could be the perfect fit for this and his cast is star-studded. Another family film fit for all ages.

April

Here we go! The year for cinema is really ramping up now. Many films will be fighting for your money over the next few months.

  • Shazam!  A rocky start for the DCEU may have found a new breath of life and direction after the acclaimed ‘Aquaman’. Next on the agenda is ‘Shazam!’, this relatively unknown story could be an unexpected standout of the year. A family friendly tale of a boy who can transform into a superhuman man might be the superhero film for you.
  • Pet Sematary – The cult classic has a new face. A must watch for any horror fans. This film will definitely provide a great alternative to a largely family friendly month for film.
  • Avengers: Endgame  – Of course you’re going to see this. It has the potential to be the biggest/most viewed film of all time. The end comes for the current iteration of the MCU and maybe even for some beloved characters. How will they bring back those lost in ‘Infinity War’? How will Captain Marvel help defeat Thanos? What happens to the Avengers? I’ll be right there with you to find out.

May

Summer is nearly upon us and studios are trying to get ahead of the game this year.

  • John Wick 3: Parabellum – The 3rd installment of the John Wick series hits screens in May and will bring with great action and story brought to life by a great cast. No doubt a fun and action filled time in the cinema it’s a good way to ease into a packed summer.
  • Aladdin – Another Disney classic remake is on its way this year. No doubt one that is on the radar for a lot of people, it could be another hit for the studio. With an interesting cast including Will Smith as the Genie who is sure to bring a lot of joy.
  • Brightburn – Having just recently released a teaser trailer the anticipation for the film has blown up and is now a regular fixture in the conversation for films to see this year. A twisted take on the ‘Superman’ story, this horror could stay with you throughout the year.
  • Godzilla: King of the Monsters – I am so hyped for this film! Monster films have been a massive pillar in cinema history with Godzilla leading the way. Now we add his villains for a huge battle which, going by the trailers, has devastating effects. It’s all leading up to the battle every one wants and I’m sure a very large gorilla might make a little cameo.

June

Summer is up and running, hopefully the weather is good and hopefully the films are too.

(Walt Disney Studios – Pixar)
  • Dark Phoenix – The latest in the ‘X-Men’ saga focuses on the character Jean Grey who loses control of her powers in a well-known comic story line. The consequences could be fatal and June is starting off with what will probably be a fun super-hero film.
  • Men in Black: International – The well known franchise is getting a reboot and this time with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson two of the hottest commodities working in Hollywood. Stacked with laughter, aliens and action, if you’re looking for something different then reintroduce yourself to the world of the Men in Black.
  • Toy Story 4 – I don’t really need to say much more. The Toy Story franchise/trilogy may be the most perfect sequence of films made. I’m sure you’ll be looking to see this.
  • Ford v Ferrari – A relatively unknown here, there hasn’t been too much talk in regards to this film. It follows a group of engineers and designers tasked to build a new automobile which could rival and beat Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans race. With a cast including Matt DamonChristian Bale and Jon Bernthal as well as being directed by James Mangold don’t let this film go unnoticed.

July

Summer closes out with a few must sees before a dull August.

  • Spider-Man: Far From Home – The Marvel steam train keeps going and the sequel to the hit ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ swings into cinemas at the start of July. After he inevitably gets brought back in ‘Endgame’ we get to see where this chapter leads Peter Parker as he embarks on a trip to Europe. Jake Gyllenhaal joins as the villain too.
  • The Lion King – You all saw that trailer right? Probably Disney’s most important remake will be released this month. We get to see the classic story retold with an amazing voice cast and realistic animals. Will it look weird seeing them talk? Probably. Will it be an amazing film? Probably.
  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – Revered director Quentin Tarantino adds to his impressive collection with this epic, set alongside the Charles Manson murders of 1969, an actor and his stunt double try to make their way in Hollywood. With a cast including: Leonard DiCaprioBrad PittMargot RobbieAl Pacino, Tim RothDamien Lewis to name a few. Make sure you don’t miss this one.

August

There is not much quality slated to be released in August. A dry month this year could be one for the family with a few films driven to the younger audience.

(20th Century Fox)
  • The New Mutants – Before we hit the more PG rated films comes a super-hero horror within the ‘X-Men’ franchise. This will probably be a film not many people go to watch however has potential to be an underrated hit. The plot – a group of young mutants trapped in a secret facility, is interesting and the fact they reshot the film to make it more scary hints at an uncomfortable viewing. One for the horror/super-hero fans.
  • Artemis Fowl – Based off the book comes the on-screen adaptation. A definite for the family before school begins. The diverse but known cast could bring the adventure tale to life. Probably not going to be that great.
  • Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw – The famous franchise brings it’s first ‘side story’ led by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham you know to expect fast paced action with a some comedy. Idris Elba joins the duo for this one. It’s an interesting change for the franchise but probably not a risky one as it will attract the general audience.

September

(New Line Cinema)
  • IT: Chapter Two – The sequel to the acclaimed 2017 film arrives just before Halloween season. The film sees the Losers’ Club return, however now they are adults who find their new fears being manipulated by a returning Pennywise. Keeping the same director and bringing in an all-star cast prepare yourself for another frightening night in the cinema.
  • Downton Abbey – A weird one, the incredibly well received and viewed television series has it’s continuation on the big screen. With a returning cast it is probably a must watch if you were an avid fan of the series. The masterminds behind the camera return as well so expect them to stay true to the story.

October

The calm down from the long summer begins, expect more smaller/slower paced films to arrive but also get ready for Oscar releases and those hidden gems.

(Warner Bros. Pictures)
  • Joker – Well then. This could be something, if the first images and leaked scenes are anything to go by, we could be about to see a Joker fit to rival Heath Ledger’s award-winning portrayal. Expect a dark and haunting tale but one which might have people talking for the months to come.
  • The Addams Family – A perfect fit for Halloween, expect to be scared and laughing during your time watching this. Again another film brings a high quality cast and for sure will be a fun film to see. It may not be too memorable for others but maybe a personal highlight of the year for you.
  • A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood – When an award-winning journalist encounters the television legend Fred Rogers his perspective on life changes. Expect a heart-warming story with top class acting. Potentially an award contender, you will get quality from this. TOM HANKS!

November

November is a packed month with a number of films fighting for your money. You might wish to save before the huge Star Wars release in December but maybe this month has something for you.

Image result for frozen 2

(Walt Disney Studios)
  • Terminator 6 – There’s been 6 of these? Well forget the last 4 existed because this film will act as sequel to the original and more famous two. With the superstars of those returning it could be a great reboot of the franchise or another forgotten film. If you are a Terminator fan then go see this.
  • Frozen 2 – It seems like the first film took over the world right? Well this one will probably do it all over again. A definite for the family and your kids/young relatives will probably be begging to see this. So go see it, it might not live up to the first one (but sequels rarely do) however it’s a guarantee this will probably be a good one.
  • Knives Out – A film that won’t be on many people’s radar and there’s not too much information around about it. This murder mystery comes with a packed cast and great indie director in Rian Johnson, if the other films this month don’t interest you then maybe you will find intrigue in this.

There are a few other films out this month however I’m not sure they will be that great: Kingsman: The Great Game, Sonic the Hedgehog & Charlie’s Angels

December

(Walt Disney Studios – LucasFilm)

  • Jumanji 3 – After the fun reboot arrived in 2017 the story returns and will no doubt have the characters return to the world of Jumanji to help save it from another villain. Expect this to be a fun, easy to watch action-adventure film.
  • Cats – The month of December has something for everyone, proven with the big screen adaptation of the music fantasy. With a talented cast you will get great musical numbers as well as a decent story.
  • Star Wars: Episode IX – The new Star Wars trilogy has been controversial and hit-or-miss depending on who you ask. The anticipation for this one is rumbling and the first trailer will take it to different heights. There’s a lot of pressure on this one to wrap up the story. With J.J Abrams back directing it probably won’t be as divisive as ‘The Last Jedi’.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this, feature on the upcoming films of the year and my picks for you. I’m sure there are many you were already aware of however I hope to have peaked your interest with some others. Maybe you will check them out. There are obviously a large number of other films being released so keep your eye out for them.
